Vegan BLT with Tempeh Bacon

This is a quick recipe for Tempeh Bacon. Give this smoky, savory, sweet and slightly spicy vegan bacon a try! The recipe only takes 20 minutes to make.

Tempeh Bacon

Tempeh is the perfect ingredient to make vegan bacon. A fermented soy product originally from Indonesia, tempeh has a meaty texture and a slightly nutty flavor. It also absorbs the flavors of any sauce or marinade easily. So, it’s an incredibly versatile ingredient to veganize any meat dish.

Another plus for using tempeh is its rich nutrient content. Not only is it high in protein, vitamins and minerals, but tempeh also provides probiotics and prebiotics for gut health. To learn more about the health benefits of tempeh, read here.

Bottomline, tempeh is tasty, easy to cook with, and loaded with healthy nutrients! It’s definitely my favorite ingredient to use for vegan bacon.

What ingredients you need

Here is a list of ingredients you will need to make vegan BLT with tempeh bacon.

For Tempeh Bacon:

  • a block of tempeh
  • tamari or low-sodium soy sauce
  • maple syrup
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • black pepper
  • cumin
  • smoked paprika
  • liquid smoke

For the BLT:

  • bread
  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • optional toppings: sprout, avocado, grilled veggies

Ingredient Notes

Tempeh – depending on where you live, tempeh might not be readily available. The most likely places that sell tempeh are natural food stores and co-ops. It is also sold online on Amazon.

For those in Japan, some major chain grocery stores like AEON and Ito-Yokado carry tempeh. You could also buy them online. One of my favorite tempeh brands online is Puratempeh.

Liquid Smoke – literally, this is a smoky, “barbecue” flavoring in liquid form. If you don’t have it, you can use smoked paprika instead.

Vegan Bread – for the bread, I used my Vegan Burger Buns recipe. I simply molded the dough into a log/loaf instead of round buns.

How to make Vegan BLT with Tempeh Bacon

A detailed recipe is in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but here’s a quick overview of the process.

  1. Slice – cut the tempeh into thin strips.
  2. Marinate – mix all the ingredients for the marinade, and marinate the sliced tempeh for 10 minutes.
  3. Cook – heat oil in a frying pan, and cook the tempeh until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Assemble – build the BLT with the cooked tempeh, bread, lettuce, tomatoes, and any other toppings of your choice.

How to Store

Store tempeh bacon in an airtight container for 3 days in the refrigerator, or for up to 2 months in the freezer. To serve, reheat in a frying pan on the stovetop.

Ingredients

  • 100 grams tempeh
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil

For the Marinade

  • 3 tbsp tamari or low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp liquid smoke if you don't have liquid smoke, add an additional 1/2 tsp smoked paprika instead

Instructions

  • Slice the tempeh into thin strips.
  • Mix all the ingredients for the marinade. Add the marinade and the sliced tempeh to a flat-bottomed container and marinate for 10 minutes.

  • Heat olive oil in a frying pan. Cook the tempeh until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  • Serve while warm. To make a vegan BLT, build the sandwich with the tempeh bacon, your choice of vegan bread, lettuce, slices tomatoes, and any other veggies you like. I love adding sprouts and sliced avocados in my BLT.

ヴィーガン・ベーコンのレシピ

テンペで作るヴィーガン・ベーコンのレシピ。タレに付けて、焼くだけで作れる簡単テンペベーコンです!そのまま食べても美味しいですし、サンドイッチの具材として使うのもオススメです。ランチにヴィーガンBLTはいかがでしょう?

Ingredients

  • テンペ 100g
  • オリーブオイル 大さじ1/2

つけタレ

  • 醤油 大さじ3
  • メープルシロップ 大さじ1.5
  • ガーリックパウダー 小さじ1.5
  • オニオンパウダー 小さじ 1.5
  • ブラックペッパー 小さじ1
  • クミンパウダー 小さじ1/2
  • スモークパプリカ 小さじ1
  • リキッドスモーク 小さじ1.5 無ければ、スモークパプリカ(小さじ1/2)で代用

Instructions

  • テンペを薄くスライスする。
  • 漬けタレの材料をボウルに入れてまぜ合わせる。テンペをタレに10分つける。

  • オリーブオイルを敷いたフライパンで中火で焼く。両面がコンガリ、カリッと焼けたら、出来上がりです!
  • そのままでも美味しく頂けますが、サンドイッチもオススメです。パンにレタス、トマトとテンペベーコンを挟んで、ヴィーガンBLTを作ってみてください。
